Creating a Culture of Safety

Creating a Culture of Safety

In chemical distribution, a strong safety culture does not come from a single policy, training session, or annual audit. It is built over time through clear expectations, consistent practices, engaged employees, and leaders who make safety part of everyday decision-making.

For ACD members, Responsible Distribution provides the framework for making that happen.

Companies within the chemical distribution industry process, formulate, repackage, warehouse, transport, and market products that require careful handling and strong safety and security practices. Managing those responsibilities effectively means creating a workplace where safety is understood not simply as a compliance requirement, but as a shared responsibility across the organization.

That is where Responsible Distribution plays an important role. Rather than treating safety as a standalone initiative, the program provides a structured framework companies can use to integrate it throughout their operations. Its 12 Codes of Management Practice address areas ranging from employee training and operational procedures to management responsibility and performance measurement, helping companies establish expectations and reinforce them at every level.

A strong safety culture also requires participation from everyone. Senior leaders set priorities and provide resources, managers turn those priorities into everyday practices, and employees apply them on the warehouse floor, behind the wheel, and throughout the organization. Responsible Distribution helps companies connect written policies with how work is performed each day.

Just as importantly, building a safety culture is an ongoing process. Through annual internal assessments, companies can critically review their practices, identify gaps, and determine where changes are needed. Third-party verification every three years provides another opportunity to evaluate those systems and confirm that they are working as intended.

The goal is not simply to check a box. It is to give companies a repeatable process for asking: Where are we today? Where can we improve? And what do we need to do next to make our workplace safer?

ACD members have seen the impact of that approach firsthand. According to Responsible Distribution Workshop evaluations from the past five years, more than 70% of participants say Responsible Distribution has helped create a safer and more secure operational model at their company.

But having a strong framework is only part of the equation. Companies also need knowledgeable professionals who can turn that framework into effective practices tailored to their individual operations.

That is why ASK Distribution Consulting launched the EHS Accelerator Program.

The two-year program is designed to help environmental, health, and safety professionals build the technical knowledge and leadership skills needed to strengthen safety within their organizations. Through in-person, virtual, and self-study coursework, participants receive in-depth regulatory training, leadership development, mentorship, and hands-on learning they can apply directly to their work.

The EHS Accelerator helps participants develop the skills to determine how those requirements should work within their own facilities, teams, and operations—and how to engage others in making safety a shared priority.

Ultimately, a strong safety culture requires both a framework and the people equipped to bring it to life. Responsible Distribution provides ACD members with that framework, while the EHS Accelerator is helping develop the professionals who can use it to make meaningful, lasting improvements within their companies.
