Waste management and disposal is an essential and notoriously complex issue for the chemical distribution industry, with businesses required to stay up to date with the necessary processes and procedures to ensure they stay compliant.
From storage and handling to record keeping and documentation, attendees were given a thorough overview of the various requirements and best practices of this important topic during our recent webinar, Regulated Waste Handling Online Training.
The session, hosted by Steve Laughlin, Corporate Compliance Office at CURA Emergency Services, focused on hazardous waste as well as excluded waste, universal waste, used oil, and state and non-Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulated waste.
“It can be a little difficult to know which specific regulations you need to comply with and how they can impact your facility,” said Nick Breslin, ACD’s Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs. “You need to make sure you’re properly classifying yourself as a Large Quantity Generator or Small Quantity Generator, and that you have all your paperwork in order. It’s easy to overlook – and if you don’t have proper procedures in place and training for your employees, you could be hit with pretty substantial fines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).”
The course provided a comprehensive overview of the latest waste regulations, Generator status, and waste determinations.
Laughlin started the session by outlining the different requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the EPA, and the U.S. Department of Transportation – and took a deep dive into the RCRA, the Generator Improvement Rule, the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation Liability Act, and the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act.
He then explored the different types of waste; packaging and the importance of using suitable containers; Central, Satellite, and Universal Accumulation Areas; and the importance of paperwork and record keeping, including examples of labeling/marking/placarding.
All participants received a Certificate of Training upon completing the course. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting a successful and valuable training experience. The session supported greater understanding and alignment with Responsible Distribution—specifically Code II (Compliance Review & Training) and Code VI (Sustainability)—reinforcing key principles of environmental, health, safety, security, and sustainability performance.
